In this Softbox lights are a great low-cost video lighting option for DIY studios, but there are a few things you need to know to prevent issues & get the best results.
With the inexpensive shop lights you can buy from Home Depot, Lowes, or any other hardware store, you can dramatically improve your video quality. In this video we review a simple three light setup that cost somewhere around $35 - $40 and putting some of my existing photographic equipment to work.
Shot on the Canon 60D and Sanyo Xacti HD1010, audio with the Rode NTG-2, Focusrite TrakMaster Pro.

I see if paining the PVC will noticeably increase the reflected light.
One type of lighting that I use quite often for talking head and interview style video is this theatrical lighting look—a low key, high contrast background that sort of looks like the interview is taking place on stage or perhaps back stage. It works effectively because it starkly isolates your talent from the space so your audience focuses entirely on them.
Traditionally you might use three point lighting to achieve this look but in this episode I show you one way you can pull it off using only two lights and one reflector.

The kit is not built as well as other more professionally oriented florescent lights (like the Westcott Spiderlites) but the quality of light they put out is quite nice! This is an inexpensive, effective way to really get a cleaner look.
