There are three parts of recessed lighting: housing, trim, and the bulb.

Housing is the main protective structure of the fixture that is hidden in the ceiling.

Trim is the molding that covers the ceiling opening around the light.

A range of bulb types can be used in recessed lighting tips.
There are two basic types of housing.

New construction housings are used before the sheet rock or drywall is installed.

Remodel housings are smaller and are used when the ceiling is in place.

Housings also have an IC “Insulation Contact” rating. Be sure your choice will pass the building codes in your area.

IC rated housings have a heat shield because they will be in contact with insulation material.

Non-IC housings do not have a shield, so they are used in un-insulated ceilings.

There are a number of recessed trims. When choosing, make sure it's the same size, brand, and product family.

Baffle trim has a ribbed interior that minimizes glare.

Reflector trim has a reflective interior to amplify the illumination.

Gimbal trims pivot and adjust to focus light where you want it.

Good for art and other wall decorations.

Wall wash trim uses a scoop to direct and confine light to a specific area of the wall.

Lights should be placed 4 to 6 feet apart for general room lighting.

For task lighting over counter-tops and other work spaces lights can be closer together, at 1 to 2 feet apart.

Lights exposed to water need to be wet rated.

Dimmers add extra versatility and ambiance to your system.

For LEDs, be sure to use an led compatible dimmer.

Convert older recessed to led with retrofit kits. They screw into the bulb socket and are held in place with clips.
