Shop and build video accessories! Whether you are a DIY type or want to find an inexpensive way to improve your video gear, Beth presents constructing a reflector and a diffuser, types of lighting, what microphones cost and their range.
Hi, I'm Beth Maree. I made this video for you if you are ready for some accessories to support your video camera and computer video software. This reflector is one example. I got it from a tutorial on Vimeo by Maximilian Vartanian.
For materials, I am going to need a hula hoop, a wide roll of extra strength aluminum foil, stiff cardboard ( I am using ram board), a roll of duct tape, a can of white spray paint and a tube of super glue. I am tucking the foil in around the edges.
To paint the white side, I put on my safety mask. Spray over the whole area of the cardboard evenly with the white paint preferably outdoors. You will see the paint spray billowing up in the room around me, that should make you aware of the dangers of painting inside. LOL. So it is finished. I completed the reflector and you will too.
Sometimes these 500 watt lights are too hot or bright for close proximity., so we are going to make a diffuser to soften and cool the affects of the big lights. I went to Joanne Fabrics for a non-flammable fabric but no luck, at least this one doesn't say it is flammable, so don't put it super close to the lights and don't smoke by it either.
I am using an aluminum picture frame, some large rubber bands, and white translucent fabric. After a super fast demo, Voila we made a diffuser.
It doesn't cost a lot of money for the basic gear to control your environments light. Nine-dollar light cans come with a long cord and a swivel adjustment and can handle up to 150 watts. Fifteen-dollar shop lights can handle 500 watts and for $45 they come with three-foot high stands. Strobe lights produce a unique affect and can be purchased from Spencer Gifts for only $30. Now let me show you the affect of each: a demonstration of the brightness of each type of light is portrayed. At this point in our lighting review we were going to have our do-it-yourself tesla coil demonstration but that was cancelled by Captain Cautious and Dr. Downer so this ends the lighting review.
Now we will look at microphones. We like lavalier microphones that clip near your face. We are using a Sony mic that is matched with the Sony camcorder. It costs just under $150 because it is Bluetooth. If you got one with a cord it would cost less than $50, but then you would have to have a cord that could go ZINGGGGG that far.
I hope that was helpful my earth children. I have just two bits of advice before I say farewell. First, keep your set uncluttered of anything not apart of your shoot. A clean set sets the standard for a focused deliberate effort at quality. Second, be sure your video has a beginning a middle and an end and always know what they are before you begin.
So, before our next shopping trip, this is Beth Maree saying, \
